Heavy Rainfall Causes Devastation in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills, Claims Three Lives
Northeast Desk, 5th October: Torrential rainfall continues to batter Meghalaya, with West Garo Hills district bearing the brunt of the disaster. At least three people have lost their lives, and several others have been injured due to flash floods and landslides, as per media reports. The situation remains critical, with further heavy rainfall forecasted for the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours, predicting dangerous weather conditions including thunderstorms and lightning.
One of the tragic incidents occurred in *Dalu village, where *Santa N. Marak (57) was killed in a landslide, while her daughter, injured in the same event, has been rushed to a health center for treatment.
The State Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to remain cautious, as many areas in the district remain at high risk of further landslides and floods. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed to conduct relief and rescue operations, with emergency teams working to assist those affected by the destruction.
Among the hardest-hit locations are Silkigre PHC and its surrounding villages, where flash floods have wiped out houses, destroyed bridges, and caused extensive damage to trees and other infrastructure.
As rescue efforts continue, the authorities are monitoring the situation closely, urging citizens to take necessary precautions to stay safe.
