Heavy Rains Trigger Flash Floods and Landslides in Sikkim, Causing Devastation
Northeast Desk, 11th June: The relentless downpour in Sikkim for the second consecutive day has resulted in flash floods and landslides, particularly affecting Singtam. National Highway 10 at Shantinagar has been blocked due to flash floods, leading to significant damage to roads and vehicles in the area. Efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore traffic on the Singtam to 32 no. NH-10 road.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 101.6 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, exacerbating roadblocks and disruptions across the state.
In Gangtok, a landslide occurred at Panihouse Area near Shiva Mandir, causing further disruption and adding to the challenges posed by the heavy rainfall.
A devastating flash flood swept through Majuwa village in the Yangang region of South Sikkim around 5 am on June 10. The calamity resulted in the loss of three lives, including Yabha Subba and Bishal Rai, with the identity of the third victim yet to be confirmed. The flash flood, originating from Bhaley Dhunga, inflicted extensive damage to properties and infrastructure, leaving several families homeless and triggering widespread devastation in the surrounding areas.
District Collector Namchi Annapurna Alley has confirmed the tragedy and initiated response efforts to assist affected families and mitigate further damage caused by the natural disaster.
The continuous rainfall and resultant flooding underscore the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the immediate aftermath and implement long-term measures to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience in Sikkim.
