Heroin Worth Rs 1.68 Crore Seized in Mizoram’s Champhai District

Northeast Desk, 22nd June: In a significant drug bust, heroin valued at Rs 1.68 crore was seized in Champhai district, Mizoram, according to a statement by the Assam Rifles. Acting on a tip-off, a joint operation was carried out by the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, resulting in the confiscation of 240 grams of heroin in the Jail Veng area on Thursday. Two individuals from Aizawl and Siaha were arrested during the operation. The suspects and the seized narcotics have been handed over to the local police for further legal proceedings.

In a related development, the Mizoram Police and Excise and Narcotics Department (END) have reported seizing drugs worth Rs 982.5 crore and arresting 581 individuals up to May 2024. This report was presented during the 7th State Level NCORD (Narcotics Coordination) meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. Renu Sharma.

The meeting, which reviewed the actions taken by various stakeholders including the Mizoram Police, END, Assam Rifles, BSF, and Mizoram State AIDS Control Society, was attended by key officials such as the DGP Mizoram, IGP Intelligence, Home Commissioner, Secretary END, and senior state government officials. Additionally, the DCs and SPs of all districts participated via video conference.

The discussion focused on the measures implemented and the future course of action in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the region.
