High-level Task Force Convenes to Propel Northeast Handloom and Handicrafts

Guwahati, Assam – In a pivotal move to invigorate the Northeast’s storied handloom and handicraft sectors, Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia today spearheaded a high-level task force meeting. Held on Tuesday, the crucial gathering brought together key stakeholders from Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur, all committed to charting a course for sustainable growth in the region’s vibrant textile and craft industries.

The deliberations, aimed at fostering robust development, saw a distinguished assembly including Nagaland Chief Minister Shri Neiphiu Rio, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Assam’s Handloom & Textiles Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, and senior officials representing Manipur.

Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Scindia underscored the government’s steadfast dedication to bolstering market access, enhancing capacity building initiatives, and generating sustainable livelihoods for the Northeast’s skilled artisans. He articulated, “In consonance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Fashion for Environment and Empowerment,’ our efforts are squarely focused on fortifying the handloom and handicraft ecosystem across the Northeast.”

The core of the discussions revolved around crafting a collaborative roadmap designed to empower local artisans, elevate existing infrastructure, and strategically harness the region’s profound cultural heritage. The overarching objective remains the creation of new economic avenues through environmentally conscious and sustainable practices, ensuring the traditional crafts of the Northeast flourish for generations to come.
