High-stakes Political Drama Unfolds as Top Jharkhand Cop Accused of Plotting Against Assam CM
Ranchi/Guwahati: A major political row has erupted with Jharkhand BJP state president Babulal Marandi levelling serious allegations against a senior police officer from his state, accusing him of conspiring to frame Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Marandi, a former chief minister of Jharkhand, took to social media to state that he would soon present evidence to back his claims.
According to Marandi’s assertions, the said police officer allegedly paid an individual on two separate occasions to travel to Delhi and Guwahati during the Jharkhand assembly elections last year. The purported motive was to ensnare Sarma, who was the BJP’s co-in-charge for the polls, in a conspiracy. Addressing Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren directly, Marandi questioned if these actions were undertaken with Soren’s knowledge. The BJP leader further warned Soren that an officer capable of such a “despicable act” against a high-ranking official could also turn against him.
In Guwahati, Chief Minister Sarma acknowledged the development, stating that he would speak with Marandi to ascertain the details. Sarma revealed that two women, one of them an Assamese, had visited his office and engaged in a “suspicious” conversation. He said he had treated them like any other member of the public and had them sent away. The Assam CM, while not directly confirming a honey-trap plot, suggested that the conspiracy could be “political” in nature. He mentioned he would connect with Marandi after attending to his official duties in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) related to the upcoming Council polls.
Marandi’s explosive claims also included an allegation that the “same people” were involved in collecting detailed information and documents on Soren’s activities and dispatching over a hundred complaint letters against him. He urged the Jharkhand government to launch a detailed probe into the matter. With the Assam assembly elections due next year, the timing of these allegations adds another layer of intrigue to the unfolding political saga. The JMM-led coalition had won the Jharkhand polls, held in November last year. Marandi’s advice to Soren was to “contact me personally to see and understand all of this with your own eyes,” suggesting a deeper internal power struggle.
