Hijab Controversy: Women have right to decide what to wear, Priyanka Gandhi says

Guwahati: In the midst of ongoing protests in Karnataka against the hijab ban, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remarked on Wednesday that women have the freedom to choose what they wear.

Priyanka said the right was protected by the Constitution in a tweet with the hashtag #ladkihoonladsaktihoon, the party’s campaign theme for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.

“It is a woman’s right to choose what she wants to wear, whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans, or a hijab.” The Indian constitution GUARANTEES this right. Ms. Vadra tweeted, “Stop harassing women.”

Rahul Gandhi, her brother, and former Congress head, gave the tweet a   thumbs up.

It may be mentioned that earlier on the on the occasion of Saraswati Puja, Mr. Gandhi had tweeted, “By letting students’ hijab come in the way of their education, we are robbing the future of the daughters of India. Ma Saraswati gives knowledge to all. She doesn’t differentiate.”

Congress members have also raised the issue in Parliament and walked out of the Lok Sabha in protest.
