Historic Appointments: Two Judges Elevated to Supreme Court, Including First Judge from Manipur
National Desk, 18th July: In a significant development for India’s judiciary, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice N Kotiswar Singh, and acting Chief of Madras High Court, R Mahadevan, were sworn in as Supreme Court judges today. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath, marking the first time a judge from Manipur has ascended to the apex court.
The appointments come as the Supreme Court strives to operate at full strength with 34 judges, ensuring judicial efficacy until at least September when Justice Hima Kohli is set to retire. Justices Singh and Mahadevan fill vacancies left by the recent retirements of Justice A S Bopanna and Justice Aniruddha Bose.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced their appointments on [date]. Following the oath-taking ceremony, the Supreme Court will once again operate with its sanctioned strength of 34 judges, inclusive of the chief justice.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justices Singh and Mahadevan on July 11, underscoring their distinguished legal careers and contributions to jurisprudence. This elevation not only reinforces the court’s composition but also celebrates diversity within India’s judicial system.
