Historic Wahab Bazaar Mosque Swallowed by Brahmaputra in Dramatic Collapse

Fakirganj, Assam – A piece of history has been tragically lost to the relentless might of the Brahmaputra River. The venerable Jame Masjid at Wahab Bazaar in South Salmara district’s Fakirganj area has been completely consumed by the river’s escalating erosion, its dramatic collapse captured on camera, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The heartbreaking footage, now widely circulated across social media platforms, vividly illustrates the escalating peril posed by riverbank erosion in Assam. The Brahmaputra’s aggressive currents have been steadily encroaching upon vast tracts of land across South Salmara, with Wahab Bazaar bearing the brunt of its fury. Homes, farmlands, critical infrastructure, and even revered religious institutions like the Jame Masjid, are increasingly vulnerable to the river’s insatiable appetite.

“The situation here is rapidly spiralling into a humanitarian crisis,” lamented a local official, highlighting the daily struggle against the river’s destructive force. “Every single day, the Brahmaputra devours more land, uprooting families and obliterating vital structures that have stood for generations.”

While the district administration is actively monitoring the dire situation and preparing much-needed relief and relocation efforts, residents are vociferously appealing for urgent and decisive intervention from both the state and central governments. Their plea is clear: implement long-term, sustainable strategies to control the rampant erosion and safeguard what remains of their homes and heritage. The community now faces an uncertain future, grappling with the profound loss and the ongoing threat of further devastation.
