Home Guard Personnel Brutally Assaulted by Police in Assam, Sparks Widespread Outrage

Guwahati: A Home Guard personnel, Bahar Alam, was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault by police officers in Roumari, Chirang, leaving him severely injured.

The incident occurred on the night of February 12, when Alam was intercepted and questioned by a night patrol team from Roumari Police Outpost while resting at his Chourabari residence.

Despite confirming his identity as a Home Guard, Alam was allegedly beaten with wires by the police officers. He managed to reach the Home Guard barracks in Dhaligaon, sustaining multiple wounds and severe lacerations. However, he was left without medical aid for the entire night, writhing in pain.

The situation took a turn only after a team of journalists intervened at 11 am on February 13, prompting the police to finally arrange for medical assistance. The delayed response has led to strong criticism, raising concerns over police accountability and human rights violations.

This incident has ignited widespread outrage, with many questioning whether a Home Guard personnel, who serves alongside the police, should be subjected to such inhumane treatment. Reports indicate that this is not an isolated case, as a similar incident allegedly occurred earlier, involving another Home Guard personnel who was assaulted by Roumari police.
