Home Minister Amit Shah Leads High-Level Meeting on Manipur Security Amid Escalating Violence

Northeast Desk, 17th June: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today is set to chair a crucial high-level meeting in New Delhi to assess and address the security situation in Manipur, confirmed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This gathering will bring together senior officials from the Central Government, State Governments, the Army, and various security forces.

The meeting is prompted by the recent surge in violence gripping Jiribam district, Manipur, where over 600 individuals have fled to neighboring Assam’s Cachar district seeking refuge since June 6. The unrest erupted following the discovery of a body, leading to a series of violent incidents, including arson attacks on homes and government buildings.

The tragic murder of a 59-year-old resident on June 6 in Sorok Atingbi Khunou has catalyzed tensions, prompting residents of Mongbung Khul to evacuate to the LP School in Chingdong Leikai for safety. These developments underscore the urgent need for stability and security measures in the region.

Reports indicate escalating violence, including arson targeting residential properties like a house in Nunkhal and a farmhouse in Leisabithol, exacerbating fears and insecurity among local residents. Jiribam, historically known for its harmonious coexistence among diverse communities, is now grappling with unprecedented turmoil.

To restore order, authorities have imposed Section 144 in the district. However, challenges persist as violence continues to disrupt daily life and pose threats to public safety. As of May 3, 2024, government figures report 221 fatalities, 60,000 displaced individuals, over 1,000 injuries, and 32 missing persons due to ongoing conflicts in Manipur. Furthermore, extensive damage to 4,786 houses and 386 religious structures underscores the severity of the situation.

Today’s high-level meeting, convened by Home Minister Amit Shah, aims to devise effective strategies and solutions to mitigate the crisis in Manipur. As the region remains volatile, urgent intervention is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and to restore long-term stability in the affected areas.
