How Diabetic Patient Can Celebrate “Iftar” in a Healthy Way….
Guwahati: The month of Ramadan is very sacred for Muslims. In this holy month, Muslims worldwide observe this month as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.
They observe this month and do not eat food from sunrise to sunset. After fasting from sunrise to sunset, iftar breaks the fast. A lot of delicious food is made during this festive month.
It is also very important for people to take care of their health and specially the diabetic patient during a long fast in Ramadan.
People to control their sugar level should also maintain healthy habits .
There are a number of healthy eating habits to be followed for the period between ‘iftars’. Let’s know about this-
1. Sleep well-
Good sleep is very important for good health and well-being. Significantly, along with breakfast it is important to fall asleep. Sleep helps in metabolic activity as well as helps in controlling sugar levels in the blood.
2. Eat energy boosting foods-
While having sehri one must have foods with high fibre, which slowly gives energy to the body. Starting from oats and multigrain bread to brown or Basmati rice, vegetables, lentils etc. can be included in the breakfast. One can also consume proteins like fish and nuts for energy.
Sugar or other beverages containing caffeine such as coffee, cold drinks should also be avoided.
3. Eat proper food during iftar-
Traditionally the fast is broken with dates and milk which has carbohydrates. Also make sure to hydrate yourself by drinking water.
Consume sweet and oily things in a limited way, as this may affect your health. Eat fruits before you wake up which may be helpful in maintaining sugar levels till dawn.
4. Be aware of overeating-
Iftar can be a celebration involving many friends and family and a lot of food! Be aware that overeating, even after a daylong fast, can cause spikes in blood glucose.
