IDOL Scam: GU suspends Kandarpa Das

Guwahati: Kandarpa Das, the former director of Institute Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) was suspended by Gauhati University (GU) on Tuesday, for his alleged involvement in the IDOL scam.

The decision to suspend Kandarpa was taken during a meeting of the Executive Council of GU.

A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) stated that the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) authorised IDOL of GU in August 2010 with approval from the Distance Education Council (DEC) for offering eight courses for three years from 2010-11.

CAG claimed that the institute provided a total of 23 unapproved courses which have kept the fate of more than 70,000 students hanging.

Furthermore, the University received an amount of Rs. 39.06 crores as fees from students for these courses.

It may be mentioned that the report by CAG was also tabled in the Legislative Assembly of Assam.
