IIT Guwahati Dean Resigns Amid Protests Following Student Suicide

Guwahati, 11th September: In the wake of protests at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) following the death of a third-year B.Tech student, Bimlesh Kumar, by suicide, KV Krishna, the Dean of Academic Affairs, has resigned. The 21-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in his hostel room early Monday, with a post-mortem examination underway to confirm the exact cause of death.

The resignation of Dean Krishna comes as students intensify demands for the resignation of Assistant Professor Rajkumar Thummer, who faces allegations of violating the code of conduct, misuse of authority, and misconduct towards students.

In response to the unrest, IIT Guwahati has announced new measures aimed at improving student welfare. These include extended counseling services, installation of QR codes linking to mental health resources on hostel doors, and a strengthened Peer Mentorship Program under the Welfare Board. The administration, in cooperation with local police, is also conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death.
