IIT Guwahati Denies Enrollment of Alleged Anti-India Bangladeshi Student

Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has firmly refuted claims circulating on social media regarding the enrollment of a Bangladeshi student named Raihan Sabbir, who was alleged to have made disparaging remarks against India and the Indian Army. The institution stated that no such individual is registered as a student, dismissing the viral posts as entirely unfounded.

The contentious social media posts asserted that a Bangladeshi national, labeled as a “Jihadi,” was a student at the prestigious IIT Guwahati and had repeatedly posted offensive content against India on Facebook. These posts further urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Assam Police to take immediate action against the individual for purportedly abusing India’s hospitality.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the matter directly, stating unequivocally, “We have conducted a thorough inquiry and can categorically confirm that no such student from Bangladesh is enrolled at IIT Guwahati. IIT Guwahati is a hugely responsible and internationally respected institution. We urge all to rely on verified facts rather than assumptions.” He further emphasized the state’s stance against anti-India activities, declaring, “Let me state unequivocally: Assam is not — and shall never be — a safe haven for anti-India activities.”

The Assam government has also cautioned against the dissemination of false information intended to tarnish the reputation of esteemed institutions and incite social unrest, warning that strict measures will be taken against those found spreading such disinformation.

In a related development, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the arrest of an additional individual from Assam’s Dhubri district for allegedly supporting Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Identifying the arrested individual as Amar Ali, the Chief Minister noted that this brings the total number of arrests in similar cases to 37. “Update on Crackdown against traitors for defending Pakistan on Indian soil. A total of 37 Anti-Nationals have been put behind bars till now,” Sarma stated in a post on X.
