Illegal Tobacco Seized in Dhubri District Raid on NH-17

Authorities in Dhubri district conducted a raid on National Highway 17 in Gauripur, seizing six sacks of illegally transported tobacco, including those concealed in mosquito net sacks, from passenger buses. The operation, led by officials from the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes Department, aimed to curb tax evasion and unauthorized transportation of goods.

Officials revealed that illegal goods worth lakhs are being smuggled daily via passenger buses to evade government taxes. These buses are allegedly being used for smuggling goods without proper documentation or shipment records.

During the raid, a passenger bus named Bhowmik (AS 15 C 7132), traveling from West Bengal to Dhakuakhana, was intercepted. The bus, operating on the Cooch Behar–Dhakuakhana route, was found carrying illegal baggage without official shipment records.

The confiscated goods have been taken to the Dhubri tax office for further investigation. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in illegal transportation and tax evasion. An inquiry is underway, and officials have issued a stern warning to transport operators against engaging in such unlawful activities.
