IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms in Northeastern States

Northeast Desk, 10th June: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert predicting extremely heavy rainfall across several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, on Monday. Additionally, significant rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and South Interior Karnataka. Coastal Karnataka and districts of Madhya Maharashtra are also on high alert for heavy showers.

The IMD has further warned that Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds on June 10. These conditions pose potential hazards and disruptions throughout the region.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and north interior Karnataka are forecasted to encounter similar thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. In Mumbai, continuous rainfall due to the early arrival of the southwest monsoon has resulted in widespread waterlogging.

Contrastingly, parts of northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and regions of Bihar, are likely to face heatwave-like conditions on Monday. Odisha is expected to experience hot and humid weather.

Severe heatwave conditions were recorded on June 9 in Madhya Pradesh’s Tikamgarh, Gwalior, and Khajuraho districts, with temperatures soaring above 43 degrees Celsius.

As the monsoon progresses, Mumbai continues to grapple with thunderstorms and rainfall, leading to significant waterlogging. The IMD advises residents and authorities in the affected northeastern states and other regions to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions amidst these varying weather conditions.
