IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for Assam and Meghalaya from June 15 to 17

Guwahati, 15th June: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Guwahati has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall for Assam and Meghalaya from June 15 to 17. The Regional Meteorological Centre reported that Guwahati will experience generally cloudy skies with intermittent rain and a high likelihood of thunderstorms on June 15.

On June 16, the city is expected to see one or two spells of rain or thundershowers, with a subsequent reduction in rainfall intensity in the following days. Guwahati recorded a temperature of 30.6 degrees Celsius on June 15, slightly down from 31.0 degrees Celsius on June 14. Dispur reported identical temperatures for both days.

The IMD has also highlighted a persisting cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and its neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level, along with another cyclonic circulation over Sikkim, which is currently facing landslides due to relentless rain. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected in isolated places across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, with heavy to very heavy rain anticipated in some areas of Assam and Nagaland on June 15.

In contrast, Delhi is enduring its fifth consecutive day of heatwaves as of June 14, with temperatures forecasted to rise to 44-45 degrees Celsius over the next five days. The IMD has issued an “orange” alert for June 15, noting the possibility of isolated thunderstorms or lightning accompanied by light rain in some areas during the afternoon or evening.
