IMD Issues Orange Alert for Heavy Rainfall in Northeast States

Northeast Desk, 4th May: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for four northeastern states, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, predicting heavy rainfall in the region over the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD bulletin, these states are likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with expected precipitation ranging from 115.5 to 204.4 millimeters on May 5, 2024.

The weather pattern is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, coupled with a trough extending from north Bihar to Manipur in the lower tropospheric levels.

The IMD report further elaborates, stating, “Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during the next 5 days.”

In contrast, Tripura has been grappling with a persistent heatwave for over a week, prompting daily severe heatwave warnings from the Meteorological Department.
