IMD Issues Orange Alert for Sikkim, Advises Safety Amidst Expected Rainfall

Northeast Desk, 19th June: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Sikkim on June 19, forecasting light to moderate rainfall with some intense spells across several districts including Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi, Pakyong, and Soreng.

According to the IMD, the rainfall is expected to commence around 9:25 am and continue over the next 2-3 hours. The department has advised residents to stay indoors and take precautions during thunderstorm activity.

“Light to moderate rain with one or two intense spells very likely over some parts during next 2-3 hours from 9:25 of June 19,” stated the IMD in its warning, emphasizing safety measures amidst potential thunderstorm conditions.

Meanwhile, ongoing efforts to evacuate stranded tourists in North Sikkim entered their second day on June 19. The Sikkim administration, led by ADM Mangan, successfully evacuated 1225 tourists from Lachung and surrounding regions. The evacuation operation commenced at 8 am and saw all tourists safely transported to Mangan.

The administration continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike amid the anticipated weather conditions.

As Sikkim prepares to weather the impending rainfall, authorities remain vigilant, urging the public to adhere to safety guidelines and stay informed about further updates from the IMD and local administration.
