IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts for Tripura Amid Heavy Rainfall Predictions
Northeast Desk, 18th June: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for Tripura, forecasting very heavy rainfall starting June 17.
In a press statement, IMD Agartala explained that a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and its neighboring areas, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level, combined with a north-south trough running from north Bihar to southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal at the same altitude, are the primary factors contributing to the weather conditions. Additionally, strong southwesterly/southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are influencing the northeastern states at lower tropospheric levels.
“Under their influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Tripura during the next 2-3 days,” the statement read.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for North and Unakoti districts on June 17, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. For June 18 and 19, a yellow alert has been imposed on Khowai, Dhalai, and the rest of the districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places, along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Moreover, for June 19, the IMD has extended the orange alert to include North, Unakoti, and Dhalai districts, while maintaining a yellow alert for the remaining districts of Tripura.
Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions in response to the severe weather conditions predicted.
