IMD Issues Red Alert in 4 states due to heatwave, orange alert in Sikkim

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha for the next two to three days, warning of an impending heatwave.

As parts of the country grapple with intense heat, government agencies have issued health advisories, and some states have suspended classes to mitigate the impact.

In its latest weather bulletin issued on the night of April 29, the IMD forecasted “intensely hot conditions” across India, with the south peninsular region expected to experience prolonged heat for the next five days.

Additionally, the IMD has issued an orange alert for parts of Telangana, Karnataka, and Sikkim.

Andhra Pradesh witnessed scorching temperatures, with Kalaikunda and Kandala recording a maximum temperature of 45.4 degrees Celsius, eight notches above normal. Similarly, Nandyal city experienced a high of 45 degrees Celsius.

Odisha’s Baripada recorded the third-highest temperature on April 29 at 44.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Sheikhpura in Bihar, which recorded 44 degrees Celsius, marking the fourth-highest temperature.
