IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya

Northeast Desk, 29th June: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya on June 29.

The IMD alert mentions that areas such as Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kokrajhar, and Nalbari will experience rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has forecast generally cloudy skies with spells of rain and thundershowers. The city, along with other parts of the state, is expected to have gloomy weather with occasional rain.

In addition, the meteorological department has predicted very heavy rain in Meghalaya on June 29 and the following days.

The IMD’s statement highlighted that a cyclonic circulation over east Assam and neighboring areas now lies over northeast Assam, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. It also noted that under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area has developed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the north Odisha coast.
