Imphal Airport Enforces 10km Laser Light Ban for Enhanced Flight Safety
Imphal, Manipur – In a proactive measure to safeguard aerial navigation and passenger well-being, the Manipur authorities have declared a comprehensive ban on the use of laser lights within a 10-kilometre radius of Imphal International Airport. The prohibition, which encompasses both ubiquitous laser pointers and elaborate laser light shows, comes into immediate effect, underscoring the state’s commitment to preventing potential hazards to aircraft operations.
The directive, issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West district, stems from recent deliberations of the Airfield Environment Management Committee at Imphal International Airport. Officials emphasised that the primary objective of this stringent regulation is to eliminate any possibility of visual distraction to pilots, thereby ensuring the unimpeded and safe conduct of flights. The presence of powerful laser beams in the vicinity of an airport poses a significant risk, as they can temporarily disorient pilots during critical phases of flight, such as take-off and landing.
Authorities have made it unequivocally clear that any individual or organisation found in contravention of this new ban will face severe repercussions. Non-compliance will invite fines and legal proceedings under a trifecta of robust legislative frameworks: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the enduring Aircraft Rules 1937, and the Airport Authority of India Act, 1994. This multi-pronged legal deterrent highlights the seriousness with which the administration views the potential threats posed by unregulated laser emissions near the vital aviation hub. The move has been widely welcomed by aviation experts and frequent flyers alike, who laud the authorities for prioritising air safety with this timely and essential intervention.
