In a historic move BCCI Announces Pay Equity Policy for Women Cricketers
Guwahati: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declared that all centrally contracted men’s and women’s cricket players for Team India would get equal remuneration on Thursday.
This was revealed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah through his Twitter handle.
He said, “I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket.”
In accordance with the announcement, Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates would receive the same compensation as their male counterparts: Rs. 15 lakhs every Test match, Rs. 6 lakhs per ODI, and Rs. 3 lakhs per T20I.
Shah said, “The women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support.”
It should be noted that the women’s team just won the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, defeating Sri Lanka in the championship match at Sylhet by an eight-wicket margin.
Five teams will compete in the inaugural women’s IPL, which the BCCI confirmed earlier.
