In a Major Setback 16 MNF leaders Join BJP in Mizoram

Guwahati: G16 party leaders, including the Chakma district MNF youth president Molin Kumar Chakma, defected to the BJP in the Chakma area in the southern portion of the state, according to BJP sources, dealing another blow to the Mizo National Front (MNF), which is now in power in Mizoram.

According to the sources, the leaders were installed at a ceremony held at the party office in Chawngte Kamalanagar, Lawngtlai district.

Nirupam Chakma, a seasoned politician and former state minister, as well as Alak Bikash Chakma, a former lawmaker, both attended the event.

Molin Kumar Chakma ran in the most recent council elections in 2018 as the former president of the District School Education Board (DSEB) of Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).

He previously belonged to the BJP and served as District President of the BJP CADC from 2002 to 2004. He served as Senior Vice-President of the Central Young Chakma Association (CYCA) from 2011 to 2016. Beginning in 2018, he actively participated in and served as President of the Chakma District MNF Youth Front for four years.

The other 15 MNF Unit leaders that joined the BJP are from different Village Councils, including those in the 4-Bajeisora MDC constituency like Bajeisora, Baganpara, Ugudasury ‘N’, and Montola.

Molin Kumar Chakma, who recently joined the saffron party, claimed that while MNF was in the opposition in CADC for ten years, they had made fun of the Congress administration’s frequent changes to the Chief Executive Member (CEM) in CADC and referred to the CADC Congress officials as corrupt.

“Now that they have joined the Chakma District MNF, those erstwhile Congress leaders are in charge of the Council. The CADC people have already experienced 5 CEMs as a result of ongoing internal disputes, and the MNF-led CADC government lacks stability, he said, adding that he sees no hope for the MNF in the future.
