India: Congress Leader Priyanka Gandhi Joins Wrestlers Protest in Delhi

Guwahati: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the protesting wrestlers at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar today for their demand for action against the alleged sexual harassment of female athletes.

The wrestlers are prostesting in Jantar Mantar and calling for the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of WFI, over allegations of sexual harassment.

The congress national secretary criticized Delhi police for withholding a copy of the FIR lodged against the President of WFI at the protest location.

“I don’t have any expectations from the PM (Narendra Modi), because if he is worried about these wrestlers, then why has he not talked to them or met them yet. Why the govt is trying to save him (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh,”Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said.

Delhi police on Friday filed two complaints against the WFI president following a directive from the Supreme Court. One of the FIRs relates to an allegation of sexual harassment made by a juvenile under the strict Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act which forbids bail.

As per reports, the case will be actively persued by Delhi police.

The wrestlers declared that they will continue their sit-in protest as the police promises to take necessary action, calling for the immediate arrest of the WFI President.

Earlier, Priyanka Gandhi criticized the government for ignoring the request of athletes who uphold the nation’s honour. She also stated that such views are silenced “when the arrogance of a party and its leaders” is at an all-time high.

Earlier in Jantar Mantar, Congress leaders Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda and Udit Raj joined the protest by the wrestlers to show their support.

The Supreme Court’s directive to file a police report into charges of sexual harassment was welcomed by Mr. Singh, who is also a BJP member.
