India Monitoring China’s Brahmaputra Dam Project, Assures Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Assam: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured on Tuesday that the Indian government is closely monitoring China’s plans to construct a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border. Dubbed the world’s largest dam, the project has raised concerns about its potential impact on downstream regions, including India.

Speaking at an event in Agra, Singh emphasized that the government is alert to the situation and committed to safeguarding India’s interests. “The Indian government is on alert,” he stated when questioned about the development. He further added that New Delhi has urged Beijing to ensure that the rights and interests of downstream states are not adversely impacted by upstream activities, signaling diplomatic efforts to address the issue.

Singh made these comments during the 57th state-level conference of the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh at Mufeed-e-Aam Inter College. In his address, he highlighted India’s growing global stature, noting the nation’s significant economic progress. “India has risen from being the 11th largest economy to the fifth, and in the next two and a half years, it will be among the top three economies,” he asserted.

The Defence Minister also touched upon India’s advancements in self-reliance, particularly in the defence sector, emphasizing the pivotal role of technology and innovation. He called on educators to take responsibility for shaping the nation’s future by guiding and inspiring students.

Reflecting on his tenure as Uttar Pradesh’s education minister, Singh recalled the implementation of the Anti-Copying Act during Kalyan Singh’s government. Despite facing criticism at the time, he maintained that his primary focus was on ensuring the welfare of students, even if it meant confronting political challenges.

Rajnath Singh’s remarks underscore the government’s proactive approach to addressing both domestic and international challenges while emphasizing India’s trajectory toward economic and technological self-reliance.
