Indian Football Legend Sunil Chhetri Surpasses ISL Scoring Mark with 64th Goal
Sports Desk, 29th September: Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri made history on September 28, becoming the all-time top scorer in the Indian Super League (ISL) with his 64th goal. Chhetri’s milestone came from a penalty at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, propelling Bengaluru FC to a dominant 3-0 victory over defending champions Mohun Bagan SG.
Chhetri, who was previously tied with Bartholomew Ogbeche at 63 goals, surpassed the record with his 64th strike. According to an ISL press release, this goal marks his 57th for Bengaluru FC, while he had earlier scored seven for Mumbai City FC during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Despite retiring from international football in June, the 40-year-old continues to perform at a high level in the ISL, having already netted three goals this season. However, Chhetri remained humble about his achievement, focusing instead on the team’s success.
“I’m really happy we won the game. All the goals I’ve scored are because of the team I’ve played with,” Chhetri said after the match. “It’s been a long journey with Bengaluru FC in the ISL, but for now, it’s all about getting the three points.”
In addition to his historic goal, Chhetri contributed significantly to the match, assisting Suresh Singh for the second goal and delivering a solid all-around performance. Edgar Mendez rounded off the scoring, securing an emphatic win for Bengaluru FC.
The Blues will now face Mumbai City FC in their first away game of the season on Wednesday at the Mumbai Football Arena.
