Indian Government Poised to Implement Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections
National Desk, 3rd Jan: The Indian central government is set to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) by notifying its rules well before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, according to a government official. The official confirmed that the rules for the CAA are prepared, and the process for eligible individuals to obtain Indian citizenship will commence soon.
The CAA, a subject of extensive discussion since its inception, aims to provide a pathway for non-Muslim immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, to acquire Indian citizenship. The official emphasized that the notification of rules would precede the announcement of election dates, ensuring swift implementation of the law.
To streamline the application process, the government has introduced an online portal for citizenship requests. Applicants will only need to declare the year of entry into India without proper travel documents, eliminating the need for additional documentation and potentially expediting the citizenship-granting process.
This strategic move by the government highlights its commitment to enacting the CAA and facilitating the naturalization process for those affected. While the exact date for the notification of rules remains undisclosed as of January 3rd, 2024, the assurance from the government official suggests it will be a priority in the near future.
