Indian Parliament Approves Additional Spending of Over Rs 51,463 crore
Imphal: The Lok Sabha has passed supplementary demands for grants, authorising an additional expenditure of Rs 51,463 crore in the current fiscal year. This move also includes the Manipur Budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The approved spending includes Rs 1,291 crore for excess grants for the 2021-22 fiscal year and Rs 1,861 crore for supplementary demands for grants for Manipur in 2024-25. The total additional spending sought by the government amounts to over Rs 6.78 lakh crore, with Rs 6.27 lakh crore to be matched by savings and receipts.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that the demands for grants include a technical supplementary of Rs 5.54 lakh crore, which will be used to repay debt. “We are removing high-cost debt by advance redemptions, which has led to a decrease in government borrowing rates,” Sitharaman stated.
Regarding the Manipur Budget, Sitharaman outlined that the total receipts are estimated at Rs 35,368 crore, with total expenditure at Rs 35,104 crore. The state’s own tax revenue is expected to be around Rs 2,634 crore, with non-tax revenue at Rs 400 crore.
The approved spending also provides for a Rs 500 crore corpus for the creation of a contingency fund for Manipur, which is currently under the President’s Rule.
