Indian Wrestler Bajrang Punia Bags Bronze at World Wrestling Championships in Serbia
Guwahati: At the World Wrestling Championships in Serbia on Sunday, legendary wrestler Bajrang Punia won the bronze medal in the men’s 65 kg division.
Bajrang overcame Armenia’s Vazgen Tevanyan in the repechage round to advance to the bronze medal match after falling to John Michael Diakomihalis of the USA in the quarterfinals.
He made championship history by being the first Indian to win four medals.
Overall, Bajrang has already earned three bronze medals. The renowned Indian wrestler has won bronze medals in 2013, silver in 2018, and bronze in 2019.
A 30-person team from India competed in the current World Championships, but they did poorly, winning only two medals.
The silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, crashed out before the finish line and was unable to finish on the podium.
In the meantime, Vinesh Phogat joined Bajrang in winning a bronze medal in the Championships in the women’s 53kg division.
Vinesh defeated Emma Malmgren of Sweden 8-0 to claim the bronze medal.
In Belgrade, the World Wrestling Championships took place from September 10 to 18.
