Indigenous Groups in Tripura Protest for Minority Safety Amid Attacks in Bangladesh
Northeast Desk, 21st September: Various indigenous bodies in Tripura, including student groups, on September 21 held peaceful protests demanding safety for minority communities facing violence in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.
The protest was organized by the *Youth Tipra Federation, the youth wing of the *Tipra Motha party, alongside Buddhist monks, the *Tripura Chakma Students Association, the *Society for the Welfare of Mog Students, and others. Demonstrators rallied in Agartala and staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh.
Suraj Debbarma, President of the Youth Tipra Federation, highlighted the historical support from Tripura and India during Bangladesh’s liberation, emphasizing the current brutal attacks on minority groups, including Bengalis, Tiprasa, Garos, Mizos, and Chakmas. He called for immediate peace and an end to the violence, stating, “We demand safety for minorities who have faced brutal attacks, with homes torched and lives lost.”
Buddhist monks from Venuvan Vihar Buddha Temple also joined the protest, condemning the vandalism of Buddhist temples and advocating for justice and safety for minorities in Bangladesh.
*Amitabh Chakma, representing the Tripura Chakma Students Association, urged Prime Minister *Narendra Modi to intervene, noting the worsening situation with over 70 indigenous tribal deaths. “This protest rally highlights the discrimination and atrocities against minority Buddhists and Hindus in Bangladesh. We call for solidarity among minorities to combat these injustices,” he said.
The protests aim to raise awareness and demand immediate action to protect vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.
