Infant Sold by Struggling Parents in Assam Rescued; Police Investigation Underway

Dhemaji, Assam — In a tragic incident highlighting the extreme poverty faced by some families, a laborer in Assam’s Dhemaji district allegedly sold his 25-day-old daughter for Rs 30,000, prompting swift intervention from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

Officials reported on Tuesday that the infant was rescued from the home of a doctor after authorities were alerted to the transaction.

Rupali Deka Borgohain, chairperson of Dhemaji’s CWC, stated that a formal complaint has been filed at Silapathar police station against the parents, Budhiman Borah and Sabita Borah, as well as the buyer and intermediaries involved.

The baby girl, born on October 4 at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, was allegedly sold due to the family’s severe financial struggles, with the father working as a daily wage laborer.

“Following a tip-off, the child was traced to Dr. Chandrajit Doley’s residence in Silapathar,” said Borgohain. The CWC had previously instructed the parents to appear before them after Child Helpline Dhemaji investigated the case, but the couple reportedly ignored the order.

Authorities revealed that two individuals, identified as Bubul Borah and Dilip Saikia, facilitated the sale. The police continue to investigate the case and have pledged to hold all parties accountable for their involvement.
