Interim Government in Bangladesh Set to Take Oath Tonight Amidst Unrest
International Desk, 8th August: Members of the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus are scheduled to take their oaths tonight, announced Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman. The ceremony, set to begin at 8:00 pm local time, will be attended by approximately 400 dignitaries, according to the Daily Star.
This development follows the dissolution of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet, which occurred three days ago after her resignation. General Waker-Uz-Zaman suggested that the interim government might consist of 15 members, although the specific names and term length of the members remain undisclosed.
From the Army Headquarters on Wednesday, General Waker-Uz-Zaman expressed optimism that normalcy could return within three to four days, citing improvements in the situation across the country. He assured that legal action would be pursued against those responsible for recent criminal activities.
The interim government’s formation comes after President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s agreement with protest organizers to appoint Yunus as its head. This decision has generated significant public interest in the new administration’s plans to address the ongoing national crisis.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman described his recent discussion with Yunus as promising, highlighting Yunus’s eagerness to take on the role. He expressed confidence in Yunus’s capability to steer the country back to a democratic process and meet the expectations of the Bangladeshi people. The general also noted that productive discussions with political parties and protest organizers had led to the proposal for Yunus’s appointment to President Shahabuddin.
