Guwahati: The Meghalaya government restored internet data services on November 28 after a seven-day ban following the unrest that broke out in the state as a result of the fire incident at the Assam-Meghalaya border that resulted in the death of 6 people, including one Assam Forest Guard.
It should be noted that the Meghalaya government shut down the internet following the Mukroh shooting incident on November 22 in order to limit the spread of information via images, videos, and text that might seriously undermine law and order.
The seven districts affected by the suspension are West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri – Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.
On November 25, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) claimed that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) administration had shut down the internet to hide its failure.
”72 hours after the horrific Mukhroh killings have passed, but the MDA government’s ineptitude has only led to sheer inaction. Curbing the democratic right to information, the MDA government has declared a shutdown of the internet to mask their failure,” AITC said in an official statement.
The Trinamool Congress also alleged that the MDA administration is allegedly culpable in the terrible Mukhroh fatalities due to their carelessness.
The Trinamool Congress attacked the Meghalaya administration on November 23 in response to the unrest on the Assam-Meghalaya border.
National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee expressed his sorrow over the violence and claimed that it was evidence of the Meghalaya government’s inability to keep the state’s law and order.
