Iraq: Thousands of Protestors Storm into Parliament, Denounces New PM Nominee

Guwahati: Thousands of protesters stormed the Parliament building in Iraq’s capital Baghdad on Wednesday to voice their opposition to the front-runner for the position of prime minister.

Supporting Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr, the demonstrators toppled concrete barriers and flooded into the Green Zone, a protected region housing numerous government departments and the U.S. Embassy. Some were also observed carrying Iraqi flags while standing on tables.

No legislators were there when the demonstrators entered the Green Zone of parliament.

The largest demonstration since the October elections in Iraq accompanied the breach.

Similar to how they did in 2016, al-followers Sadr’s invaded the parliament, conducting a sit-in protest and demanding political reform.
