ISRO to Establish Key Space Facility in Assam
Guwahati, Assam – In a landmark development for India’s space program and the state of Assam, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is poised to establish a significant multi-purpose facility within the state. The initiative aims to enhance the security of India’s valuable space assets and significantly improve weather forecasting and advisory services across the region.
This strategic move signifies a pivotal moment in Assam’s journey towards scientific and technological progress, promising to open new avenues for research, development, and public engagement in space science.
A crucial step towards realizing this vision was taken with a joint site inspection conducted by Keshab Mahanta, the Minister overseeing Revenue, Disaster Management, IT, Science, Technology, and Climate Change for the Government of Assam, alongside Dr. V. Narayanan, the Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO.
The envisioned facility is designed to play a vital role in supporting diverse aspects of India’s ambitious space programme. Furthermore, it is expected to significantly boost regional capabilities in cutting-edge space research and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges.
During the site visit, Minister Keshab Mahanta conveyed the unwavering commitment of the Assam government to ensure the seamless establishment of the project. He also proposed an inspiring addition to the facility – the creation of a space museum that would serve as an educational resource for students and a source of fascination for the general public, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for space science.
Dr. V. Narayanan responded positively to the proposal for a space museum, assuring full cooperation from ISRO in making this vision a reality. He underscored the strategic importance of expanding ISRO’s presence in the Northeastern region of India, highlighting its benefits for both enhancing operational efficiency and promoting inclusive development across the nation.
Adding his voice to this significant announcement, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his excitement through social media. He enthusiastically stated, “Assam is on track to establish a space hub and eventually will have its own satellite in space.”
This groundbreaking initiative not only promises to fortify India’s overall space capabilities but also firmly positions Assam as a forward-thinking state actively contributing to the nation’s scientific ambitions and technological advancements in the space sector.
