Itanagar Police and School Children Hold Drug Awareness March on International Day Against Drug Abuse

Northeast Desk, 26th June: In observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a road march involving school children and police officials was held from Akash Deep to the Itanagar police station. The event, held on June 26, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse through various activities, including drug awareness sessions conducted by resource persons.

Deputy SP of Itanagar, Kengo Dirchi, spoke to reporters about the significance of the day, emphasizing its global observance to combat the drug problem with a focus on science, compassion, and solidarity. “We have organized a week-long awareness program, including a sports event for substance abuse victims and a drawing competition with 47 participants. Today, we conducted a rally that saw active participation from students and police personnel,” Dirchi said.

Highlighting the theme “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention,” Dirchi reaffirmed the police’s commitment to making Itanagar drug-free. He called for community cooperation, urging victims and drug addicts to come forward and utilize the anti-drug corners available in every police station in the capital city. Information on rehabilitation and de-addiction programs is also provided at these stations.

Dirchi mentioned that the authorities are strictly enforcing the NDPS Act while adopting a humanitarian approach to create awareness among victims. He pointed out that drugs are a major root cause of various crimes and the rising cases of HIV, as addicts often share syringes. He urged students and community-based organizations to actively participate in raising drug awareness, noting that public response has been inadequate so far.
