Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had previously been named as a candidate for vice president announced his resignation as governor of Bengal on Sunday. BJP President JP Nadda declared the name of West Bengal Governor as his contender in the vice-presidential election by shocking everyone.

Reports claim that the governor of a nearby state will temporarily take over the role of governor of West Bengal.

Former MP Dhankhar, a lawyer by trade, took over as governor of West Bengal in August 2019. The Central Government appointed Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to the Raj Bhavan following the conclusion of his term as governor. But once Dhankhar assumed leadership, it was evident that Raj Bhavan and Mamata Banerjee’s administration were at odds over a number of matters.

In 2017, the BJP announced the name of the then Cabinet Minister, former BJP President and veteran MP M Venkaiah Naidu as its candidate for the post of Vice President.
