Guwahati: Jagdeep Dhankhar has been announced as India’s next vice president following the completion of the vote-counting for the elections held on Saturday.

The NDA’s Dhankhar won the seat by defeating opposition nominee Magret Alva to become India’s 14th Vice-President.

The former Governor of West Bengal, Dhankhar was consistently in the lead. He will take over for outgoing Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Laddoos are reportedly being given out as a celebration for his triumph has started at 11 Akbar Road in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly also arrived there.

Meanwhile, Dhankhar has begun to receive congratulations on social media.

Opposition candidate and former Union minister Margret Alva took to Twitter to congratulate Dhankhar.

She wrote, “Congratulations to Mr Dhankhar on being elected Vice President! I would like to thank all the leaders of the Opposition, and MPs from across parties who voted for me in this election. Also, all the volunteers for their selfless service during our short but intense campaign.”

It should be noted that voting for today’s vice-presidential elections started earlier and ended at 5:00 p.m. Shortly later, the competition got under way, and Dhankhar was named the winner.
