Jagdeep Dhankhar Took Oath as 14th Vice President of India
Guwahati: Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday took the oath to become India’s fourteenth vice president at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
The Vice President’s oath was administered by India’s President Draupadi Murmu.
The former governor of West Bengal took the oath in the name of God and in Hindi.
His ceremony was attended by many dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and many more.
Jagdeep Dhankhar was declared the new vice-president of India following the completion of the vote-counting for the elections held on August 6.
The NDA’s Dhankhar won the seat by defeating opposition nominee Magret Alva to become India’s 14th Vice-President.
The BJP-led NDA candidate won the election comfortably with 528 votes against Alva’s 182. Dhankhar secured 74.36 per cent. He has the highest winning margin in the last six vice presidential elections held since 1997.
The Trinamool Congress, which has 36 MPs overall, including 23 in the Lok Sabha, had not voted. Two of its MPs had, however, already cast their votes. Up to 55 MPs chose not to cast a ballot in the vice-presidential election.
The “Certification of the Election of Jagdeep Dhankar as the Next Vice President of India” was jointly signed on August 7 by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.
