Jiribam Killings: Joint Action Committee Demands Immediate Action from Manipur Government
Imphal, Manipur: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called on Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to take swift action against militants involved in the recent killing of six hostages, including three women and three minors, in Jiribam’s Borobekra sub-division.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the JAC outlined several resolutions following the tragic killings, which claimed the lives of Laishram Baren Meetei (60), Maibam Kesho Meetei (71), Yurembam Rani Devi (60), Telem Thoibi Devi (31), Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8), Laishram Langamba Singh (8 months), Laishram Chingkheinganba Singh (2.5 years), and Laishram Heitonbi Devi (25).
The JAC’s demands include:
1. The immediate arrest of militants responsible for the killings, with a deadline of 72 hours, ensuring they face stringent legal consequences.
2. The declaration of the Hmar Village Volunteers (HVVs) of Pherzawl and Jiribam districts as a terrorist organization, following threats made to Meitei police, IRB personnel, central forces, and villagers to vacate the area under the threat of violence.
3. Adequate ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased.
4. Providing government jobs to a member of each bereaved family.
5. The withholding of the deceased bodies until the aforementioned demands are met.
The committee has emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues to ensure justice for the victims and restore peace in the region.
