Joint Earthquake Drill Conducted in North Sikkim Following 4.4 Magnitude Quake

Northeast Desk, 14th September: In a coordinated effort, the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the Indian Army conducted a joint earthquake drill in Chungthang, North Sikkim. The drill, organized in the aftermath of a moderate 4.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Sikkim on September 6, aimed to enhance disaster preparedness and response.

The exercise involved search and rescue operations, patient evacuation, triage, and the setting up of a makeshift hospital. The Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army lauded the seamless coordination between agencies, ensuring an efficient disaster management response.

The earthquake, which occurred at 7:58 pm IST, had its epicentre at coordinates 27.02N, 89.27E, with a shallow depth of 5 km. Tremors were felt across eastern, south-eastern, and southern parts of Sikkim, approximately 74 km from Tadong.

Although there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties, authorities remain on high alert and continue to assess the situation.
