Justice D Y Chandrachud to take oath as CJI on Nov 9

Guwahati: Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud has been appointed to serve as the country’s next Chief Justice (CJ) on Monday.

President Droupadi Murmu will ordain Justice Chandrachud as India’s 50th Chief Justice on November 9.

Chandrachud will succeed Justice UU Lalit, who has a brief 74-day term in office. Justice Chandrachud was suggested as his replacement by Chief Justice Lalit last week since he is the senior-most Supreme Court justice.

The chief justice of India, CJI Lalit, held office for just 74 days before stepping down on November 8.

A tweet in this regard was shared by Union law minister Kiren Rijiju.

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22,” Rijiju wrote on Twitter.

Rijiju also sent the incoming CJI his warmest wishes for the official oath-taking ceremony.

The Supreme Court’s second-oldest justice is Justice Chandrachud. YV Chandrachud, his father, served as India’s 16th Chief Justice from February 2, 1978, until July 11, 1985.

The Supreme Court appointed Justice Chandrachud, who was born on November 11, 1959, to the position on May 13, 2016. He served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court prior to his nomination to the Supreme Court on October 31, 2013. He served as a judge on the Bombay High Court as well grom March 29, 2000, till his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court,

He had also served as Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 until his appointment as a judge in the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court named him a senior counsel in June 1998.
