Justice Sandeep Mehta Appointed As New Chief Justice of Gauhati HC

Guwahati: Senior judge of Rajasthan High Court Justice Sandeep Mehta has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Following Justice RM Chhaya’s retirement the position recently became vacant.

Justice Mehta was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on the advice of the Supreme Court Collegium.

Justice Mehta was selected to serve as a judge on the Rajasthan High Court on May 30, 2011. He will leave the bench on January 10, 2025.

“The Rajasthan High Court is unrepresented among the Chief Justices of the High Courts,” the Collegium said.

The Collegium had originally decided to choose Justice K Vinod Chandran as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court but it then retracted that decision and recommended that he be named Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature in Patna instead.

“Considering the above position, the Collegium resolves to recommend the appointment of Mr Justice Sandeep Mehta as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court as he is fit and suitable for the same,” the Collegium said.

Justice Sandeep Mehta has experience working in the Supreme Court, the High Court and trial courts. In three judicial inquiry commissions led by both sitting and retired High Court judges he continued to serve as counsel for the commission.

Justice Mehta has been a member of the Rajasthan Bar Council since 2003 and has continued to be a member till his elevation in 2009.
