Guwahati: Senior Congress politician and former union minister Kapil Sibal announced his resignation from the party and filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on Wednesday.

Sibal filed his nomination papers in the presence of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

“On the 16th of May, I tendered my resignation from the Congress party,” Sibal said after filing a Rajya Sabha nomination with the support of the SP.

“As an independent candidate, I filed the nomination.” I am grateful to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav for his help. I’d also like to express my gratitude to Azam Khan for his continued support, not only now but throughout the years,” Sibal said.

The veteran Congressman also stressed the importance of having an independent voice. “While remaining in opposition, we aim to form an alliance to resist the Modi government.”

Kapil Sibal was a member of the G-23 group of Congress leaders that sought to restructure the party’s structure. Sibal had been forthright about his frustrations and his desire for change.
