Guwahati: Karbi Anglong police stopped a truck coming from the neighbouring state of Manipur and discovered 116 soap boxes hidden inside that contained 1.3 kg of heroin on Friday night in Lahorijan.
Two people were arrested by the police in relation to the incident.
The arrestees have been identified as Azizul Haque and Dildar Hussain.
Chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma has praised the Assam police for their ongoing fight against drugs over the past two years.
On the same day, a narcotics dealer was shot by police in Kaliabor’s Hatbagan area in Assam’s Nagaon district.
The incident took place when the authorities carried out a raid on a reputed drug supplier’s hideout. Due to darkness, the accused attempted to flee; in order to stop him the police had to open fire.
The narcotics dealer have been identified as Saddam Hussain who was shot in the leg and taken right away to a local hospital. He was later moved to Nagaon for medical care due to his wounds.
From the hideout, the police have seized a sizable amount of cocaine and other illegal substances. To find out if there were any further drug trafficking network participants in the incident an investigation is currently being conducted.
