Karimganj cremation scam: Misuse of MGNREGA funds unearthed, locals demand proper investigation
Guwahati, 9th January: A cremation scam has come to light in Karimganj where a group of corrupt individuals have allegedly embezzled funds intended for the construction of a crematorium.
The crematorium was set to be built in the Bajarghat area under Govindganj GP in South Karimganj constituency, funded by the MGNREGA scheme in the fiscal year 2017-18.
Despite four pieces of iron being purchased for the purpose, the crematorium remains non-existent five years later.
The misuse of Rs 4 lakh intended for this project has caused outrage, with locals questioning the people involved in the project.
“We were unaware that a crematorium was being built nearby. We thought it was a waiting place for people. But later we got to know that Rs 4 lakh was intended for this project. Now, the crematorium remains non-existent to date”, one local said.
The lack of a crematorium has forced locals to resort to cremating bodies on river banks and cultivating paddy fields. There is a growing demand for a thorough investigation into this scandal.
