Karnataka: Death threats High Court Judges over hijab verdict, 2 held
Guwahati: Two people has been arrested for threatening to kill Karnataka high court justices who handed down the “hijab ruling,” which upheld the ban on female students wearing the Islamic headscarf in schools.
The arrestees identified as Kovai Rahmathullah and S Jamal Mohammed Usmani. Both of them is a resident of Tamil Nadu.
A three-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court said that hijab is not an essential Islamic practice and that the headscarf’s exclusion is subject to reasonable restrictions.
A state government decree requiring students to wear the uniform required by educational institutions was likewise upheld by the court.
Several religious minority community organisations have been protesting the ruling across Tamil Nadu since it was announced. On Thursday, a video clip from a protest meeting in Madurai of Tamil Nadu went viral showing Kovai Rahmathullah, a member of the Tamil Nadu Tawheed Jamath (TNTJ) auditing committee apparently alleging that a judge who rendered a “wrong” judgement was slain during his morning stroll in Jharkhand.
“There are some emotional folks in our neighbourhood,” he said
“BJP is waiting for an opportunity to blame us if something happens to them (Karnataka HC judges),” he added.
Meanwhile, police officials have registered cases against TNTJ Madurai district president Habibullah and vice president Asan Badshah, the meeting’s organisers.
It may be mentioned that TNTJ headquarters speaker S Jamal Mohammed Usmani was arrested in Thanjavur on Friday and the outfit’s Thanjavur district leader Rajik Mohammed was arrested for making derogatory remarks about Karnataka HC judges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
