Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve Flood Claims Lives of Nine Animals
Guwahati, 26th July: In the recent flood of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, leads to the tragic death of nine animals. Among the death, two one-horned rhinos were reported to have lost their lives due to the flood.
According to Arun Vignesh CS, the Divisional Forest Officer of Kaziranga National Park, the water level is now receding, but authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the flood situation. Apart from the rhinos, one buffalo and a deer also drowned in the rising waters.
Further, the flood-related casualties also included a deer and a python, both of which were unfortunate victims of vehicle collisions. Additionally, a hog, which had been rescued from the North bank of the park, sadly did not survive during treatment.
Despite the water receding, some parts of the park continue to remain flooded, making the situation challenging for both the park authorities and the animals residing there. The park is home to a significant population of one-horned rhinoceros, with a count of 2,613 recorded during the 2022 rhino census.
The rhino population in Kaziranga National Park currently numbers 2,613, with 866 males, 1,049 females, 273 unsexed animals, 279 juveniles, and 146 calves. During this difficult period, authorities are actively monitoring the situation and taking the necessary precautions to preserve species and their environment.
